Self Defence

We live in unsafe times. Can your daughter defend herself against an attack?

Self Defence

Have you ever thought of enrolling your daughter in a self-defence class? Not only is it great exercise, but this knowledge may also save her life some day. The percentage of women in India who can defend themselves in case of an attack is dismally small, although crime against women is constantly on the rise. Your daughter doesn't need to be a karate champion to ward off an attacker; even a few basic moves can help. Remember, assailants are rarely trained to fight. They are simply relying on the belief that women are weaker than they are by virtue of their sex. A few smart moves can give your daughter an advantage.

Pepper Spray

Invest in a bottle of pepper spray, and let your daughter carry it around in her bag. The only problem is that the spray is bulky, and it may not fit into smaller evening bags. As a result, she may not have it on her at the time she needs it the most. However, encourage her to carry it around as far as possible. Spraying an assailant with pepper spray renders him helpless for at least a couple of minutes, during which time your daughter can make a quick getaway.

Cell Phone

Give your daughter a cell phone. Don't think that by doing so you may be spoiling her. Instead, realise that when your daughter has a cell phone, it will always be easy for you to track her down. If she is on the way back from somewhere and her car gets stranded in the dark, she can lock the doors and call you, while she waits inside. Help will always be just a phone call away.

Intuition

Tell your daughter to always follow her intuition. There may often be times when your daughter feels a slight apprehension when speaking to someone, but she ignores the feeling because she doesn't want to appear rude. If you have to instil one thought in your daughter, let it be this: It's better to be rude than raped or dead. If someone she is speaking to makes her feel even a little uncomfortable, tell her that she should feel free to simply excuse herself and walk away.

Main Door

She should never open the door to a stranger. When delivery boys come home, under no circumstances should she let them in, or leave the door open when going to get change. She must always, always shut the door, even if it seems rude.

One of the smartest things you can do is to have a double door - so you need never open the second door to someone you don't know. If it is the postman, delivery boy or anyone else, your daughter can just open the inner door and accept any packages through the openings in the second door. Let the second door have large enough openings for packages to get through, and so your child can have a conversation through the grills without feeling compelled to open the door.

Women's Rights

Woman is in no way inferior to her counterpart, man.

A major civilization transformation has taken place throughout the 20th century: the evolving empowerment of women together with the recognition of women's rights as human rights. 8th of March is universally acknowledged as International Women's Day which means that the woman of today has come of age and wants to lead a dignified life of equality with man. The slogan raised today by the women of the world is: "Equality, Dignity and Self-Respect is what we want". This slogan is indicative of the new awareness among women the world over. Modern women have raised their voices against the male dominated and feudalistic society.

Level of consciousness, emergence of successive generations of women at the forefront of knowledge, growing numbers of women with enough education to investigate the conditions, aspirations and perspectives among the poor - all this was an impulsion to react to the need for change in societal patterns. Other factors also contributed to this process: the growth of women studies in many universities throughout the world supplemented by burgeoning networks of the cross fertilization of ideas, approaches, tactics and strategies. Added to these was the active role played by women in the struggle for democracy against oppressive regimes in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

The role of women as a separate issue of more than merely token significance entered international debate at the first UN Conference on Population and Development, held in Bucharest (Romania) in 1974. The United Nations Conferences on women and other development and socio-economic issues, held since 1975, have helped to heighten the visibility of the role, the plight and the potential of women on the international scene. To quote United Nations Development Program (UNDP's) Human Development Report "human development is impossible without gender equality".

Woman is in no way inferior to her counterpart, man. From time immemorial, woman represents history in all its grace and distress in terms of time and space, social ups and down, political subjugation and freedom. In religion, social intercourse, education, literature, art and culture, her status was never in doubt.

As a significant measure towards initiating women's empowerment, equal-pay legislation should be adopted and expanded in all countries so as to incorporate the principle of equal pay for work of equal value. This would allow for a re-evaluation of women's professional and 'pink-collar' occupations, with increases in both pay and status. Affirmative-action measures might include the provision of day-care centres, flexible working hours, women's quotas in retirement, promotion, and retraining; and outlawing and prosecuting sexual harassment in the work place.

Labour laws need also to be expanded to provide better conditions, benefits and job security for domestic and agricultural workers, part-time, temporary, and miscellaneous workers in the home, and employees in export-processing zones. More research should be conducted on the contribution of women's unpaid work to family and national economies - including work in subsistence agriculture, livestock husbandry, domestic work, child-care, and care for the elderly, the disabled, and this time. This analysis should incorporate time-use data, and should be used in the design of future policy. All new development initiatives and economic and social planning should be subject to a 'gender audit' to assess their effects on women's quality of life as well as on the inequalities persisting between men and women.

The majority of the world's women are poor citizens of the poor countries; they are 'deprived' and 'backward'. About 40% of females worldwide are children under the age of 15. The World Health Report 1995 highlighted the grim prospects facing a baby girl born in one of the least developed countries, where one-sixth of all births occur annually. Equity demands that the conditions of such deprived infants and children be improved without delay.

There is a need to formulate a comprehensive global action plan for girls and adolescent females. It will redress many of the prevalent injustices suffered by women.

The greatest need of the hour is to change the social attitude to women. Women's empowerment means a lot, but the ultimate goal of the equalization of man and woman would materialize only when her complimentary role is recognized by the society.

Power of Red Tomato

Power of Red Tomato

Eating a balanced diet containing vegetables and fruits is considered the best way of ensuring good health. Vegetables are not just tasty and nutritious, but they also enhance the immune system of our body. One vegetable which most of use extensively, but do not pay much attention to is the tomato.

Anti-Cancer Properties

This vegetable has antioxidants and hence is a great aid in keeping cancer at bay. Tomatoes contain a pigment called Lycopene, which reduces the risk of cancer. The redder the tomato, the more is the Lycopene in it. The good news is that cooking does not destroy this pigment. Green or yellow tomatoes do not contain this pigment. Lycopene is also useful in reducing high blood pressure, a major risk factor for coronary heart diseases and strokes.

Besides this, tomatoes have high nutritive value. It contains vitamin A, C and potassium. Fat-soluble vitamin A is involved in the formation and maintenance of healthy skin, hair and mucous membranes. It also helps in good and clear vision and is necessary for proper growth of bones and tooth development.

Soup it, Gravy it or Juice it

You can include tomatoes in your diet in various ways:

  • Tomato soup for one. Tomato soup taken without butter is considered to be an excellent food for people who are on a weight-reduction diet.

  • Add tomatoes in your green salads.

  • While making a sandwich, don't forget to add tomato slices.

  • Make vegetables in a tomato gravy.

  • Make your snacks tasty by topping it with tomato ketchup (home-made to ensure that there are no preservatives, added artificial flavours or colours in it).

  • A glass of plain, fresh tomato juice with a pinch of salt or sugar had in the morning, serves as an excellent coolant for your body.
  • Vitamin C in the tomatoes can also rejuvenate a dull skin. A mixture of tomato juice and rose water applied daily to on an oily face can work wonders. It acts as a natural astringent. Not many may know, but tomatoes are good to get rid of dandruff.

    Pulp as Scalp Conditioner

Here is a tomato treatment for dandruff-free, soft and silky hair:

    Dandruff treatment

  • Massage your head with warm coconut oil.

  • Steam the scalp and hair with a hot water towel wrapped around the head. Do this three to four times. Leave the towel for 3-4 minutes each time, till it cools off.

  • Boil tomatoes and remove its skin.

  • Mash the tomato and apply the pulp only to the scalp.

  • Leave it for half an hour and then shampoo your hair.
  • Do this once a week, and repeat again if dandruff persists. Tomato also acts as a conditioner and brings shine to lusterless hair.

    Good Health Advice..please do read

This is e-mail received from a person working in a Software Company

Dear colleagues, I am working in Blore Software City .... I wanted to share an incident of my life with you, hoping that it may be an eye opener to you so that you can live more years.
On 27th October afternoon, I had severe heart attack symptom and I was rushed to the hospital.
After reaching to the hospital, the doctors prescribed a test called angiogram. This test is basically to identify blood flow of heart arteries. When they finished the test they found a 94% block in the main artery, please see the image below with red circle.
    image00121.jpg
At this point, I wanted to share my living style, which has caused this block in my heart arteries. Please see the below points of my life style, if any of these points are part of your life style then you are at risk, please change yourselves.
    1. I was not doing any physical exercise for more than 10 years , not even walking 30 minutes a day for years.

    2.
My food timings are 11:00 AM Breakfast or no Breakfast, 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM Lunch and dinner at 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM.

    3.
Sleeping in very odd timings, going to bed between 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM. Waking up at between 9:00 AM and 10:30AM ....... Some times spending sleepless nights.

    4.
I used to eat heavily because of long gaps between lunch and dinner and I used to make sure that Non-Veg is available most of the time, there were times when I did survey on city hotels to find delicious Non-Veg dishes. I was never interested in vegetable and healthier food.

    5.
Above all I was chain smoker from years.

    6.
My father passed away due to heart problems, and the doctors say the heart problems are usually genetic.

Once they identified the major block they have done immediately a procedure called angioplasty along with 2 Stints, mean they will insert a foreign body into the heart arteries and open the blocked area of arteries. Please see the below image after the procedure.
    image00215.jpg
I learnt from the doctors that 60% people will die before reaching the hospital,20% people will die in the process of recovering from heart attack and only 20% will survive . In my case, I was very lucky to be part of the last 20%.

    Doctors instructions:

    1..
Need to have physical exercise for minimum of 45 minutes daily.
    2. Eat your food at perfect timings, like how you eat during your school days. Eat in small quantities more times and have lot of vegetables and boiled food, try to avoid fry items and oily food. Fish is good than other non-vegetarian food.
    3. Sleep for 8 hours a day, this count should complete before sun rising.
    4. Stop smoking.
    5. Genetic problems, we cannot avoid but we can get away from it by having regular checkups.
    6. Find a way to get relived from the stress (Yoga, Meditation etc).
So I urge you all to please avoid getting into this situation, it is in your hands to turn the situation up side down, by just planning / changing your life style, by following simple points above.

5 Tips to help you eat healthy and stay on budget

Here are 5 simple tips to help you eat healthy on a budget.

    1. Stay In Season - If you want to buy fresh fruit and vegetables out of season, expect to pay top dollar. These items either have to be grown in greenhouses or shipped from halfway around the world.

    2. Shop Local - Visit a local farmer's market, you'll be surprised at how much you'll learn about your food and how far your dollar will go. If you have to leave the city, make a family trip of it.

    3. Cut back on meat - Top quality meat that is pasture-raised and antibiotic free is going to cost more than the discount priced hormone saturated frankenmeat at your local grocery store. Buy a food scale and monitor just how much meat you and your family are eating. The USDA recommends the average person eat 5 1/2 ounces of protein per day. Measure your intake so you can stay healthy without eating excessive amounts of meat products.

    4. Pinch pennies! - Clip coupons, watch for sales, and don't ignore the fancy health stores- they have sales too!

    5. Inconvenient items - Stay away from convenience items. Sure they're quick and easy, but they also cost extra. Instead, buy whole food ingredients and make your own meals.

There you have it, 5 sensible tips to eat healthy on a budget. Funny, when I look at that list I see the common sense tips our parents and grandparents used every time they went to the grocery store. Nowadays we lack so much common sense when it comes to our food that we have to re-educate ourselves as adults to do basic things like shop for food.

How to get rid of ACNE (PIMPLES)???

ACNE (PIMPLES) Acne is a common problem faced by almost all teen-agers and youth. What is acne and why do we get them. Acne is actually caused because of hormone imbalance. Your skin breaks out because of a hormone called testosterone. Both men and women have testosterone in their systems. In fact, did you know that in order to make testosterone, boys bodies have to make female hormones first? If you have acne, you haven't got abnormal levels of testosterone. You've got skin that reacts abnormally to this hormone. You start producing testosterone around the time you start sprouting body hair. Testosterone tells glands in your skin, called sebaceous glands, to produce oily stuff called sebum. To add to the problem the inside of the tubes that hold each hair become gummy and get partially blocked - giving you blackheads. Put together if sebum blocks the tubes --- you have big acne.

So go to your pharmacist or doctor to get your acne treated. Here are a few tips that will help you know how to treat acne at home.

    1. If you have red angry looking acne, don't touch it. If you squeeze now, all you'll do is force the contents deeper into the skin that will make matters worst. And all you'll end up with is redder, angrier acne than you had before. Don't do it.

    2. If you have a yellow custard top? Go for it. These beauties CAN be squeezed but there's an art to it. Here's how. Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid trouble and infection. Put a tissue over your finger. Why? Because you want the contents of the spot on the tissue, not splattered all over the mirror. Using the side of your thumb and the end of your finger, very gently start to squeeze. Don't whatever you do, use your nails as this will damage your skin. Stop when you're applying a lot of pressure and nothing is happening and you see clear fluid, rather than yellow grotty stuff and the spot begins to bleed. When you've finished dab it with antiseptic. Once the custard bit is out, the spot will heal more quickly than an unsqueezed yellow top would, providing that you now leave it well alone. Now wash your hands again.

    3. Whiteheads and blackheads. If acne is left untreated they may cause this problem. Here the rule is if they're black, squeeze but if they're small, white raised lumps leave them alone. All that stuff about clean hands, tissues and stopping if nothing is happening or you see blood, apply here too.

Tips for acne treatment 1. DON'T TRY TO WASH IT AWAY
Acne isn't caused by dirt. In fact people with oily skin have cleaner skin than average because they wash it more often. But it's a fact that washing too much can make acne worse because it makes the skin dry and sore. So, wash no more than twice a day, using mild soap and water. If you have patches of dry skin, don't worry about putting moisturizer on. It won't make your acne worse. If you're still concerned, use an oil free moisturizer.

    2. DON'T NUKE 'EM
There are lots of over the counter creams, gels, lotions and potions. Most contain a powerful bleaching agent called benzoyl peroxide. You'll find the strength written on the label. You might be tempted to go straight for the highest sort, working on the 'let's nuke 'em principle. The likely result is that you'll irritate your skin like mad. It may also go all dry and scaly on you. But if you still are willing to bleach then use the mild one.

    3. MAKE A DATE - THE TWO MONTH RULE
If you have been using over the counter remedies for two months and there is no real improvement in your spots, this is the moment to go and make an appointment with your doc.

    4. YOUR DOCTOR - THE TWO MONTH RULE
The thing you are most likely to be given by the doctor is a prescription for antibiotics. These will either be topical (which means something you put on your skin) or tablets you have to take every day. Whatever treatment your doctor or pharmacist recommends, follow the instructions carefully and keep using for at least two months. There should be a noticeable improvement by this time. If not, go back to discuss other possible treatments Antibiotics are perfectly safe to take. You should take them for at least two months and then go back to your doc. If they seem to be working, he will probably tell you to keep taking them and give you some more. If they aren't doing their stuff, don't despair - he has loads of other spot busters in his black bag.

    5. YOU ARE NOT AN ALIEN - BUT JUST BE PATIENT
Hundreds of thousands of teenagers seek help for acne. You are not alone. You are not an alien. And if people really care about you, they don't even notice your acne, however bad you think they are. But you will need to be patient. Most treatments take time to work. At least two months. And some treatments, like antibiotics will work well but may have to be taken for months, or even years.

    6. THE MONTHLY CURSE... OR EXAMS
Acne does tend to get worse just before a period. It's because there is a surge in hormone levels at this time. But boys don't get away lightly either. Being hot and sweaty (particularly after sports like football) makes acne worse. And for everyone, stress - particularly at exam times - is a cue for a mega breakout. This is normal - and of course, even more reason for feeling stressed. Go chill. They'll get better - promise.

    7. WATCH WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR SKIN AND HAIR
Some beauty products are big no-nos. These include pomades and defrizzing agents for hair that tend to cause an outcrop of blackheads along the hairline and some of the heavier cosmetics. And be wary of suntan oils. Not all will make you break out, but some may. Try a friend's first before you buy. By the way, the sun might dry up acne and a tan might hide them, but your skin is still vulnerable in the sun and needs protection.

    8. CARRY ON KISSING
You can't catch acne during kissing - go for it!

    9. CARRY ON EATING CHOCOLATE
It's a myth that eating chocolate and fried foods causes acne. However, eating a good diet improves your general well-being and this is reflected in your skin.

Common Questions asked about acne problem Does wearing make up cause acne?
It is not necessary that wearing make up causes acne. Acne is caused because of hormonal imbalance mostly during puberty. But you have to take special care while you apply make up and thereafter if you have acne. Make sure you wash any make up tools, including sponges and brushes as often as possible as these become a breeding ground for bugs which can cause your spots to pop up. Stop wearing make up if you have too many spots and you can resume after you have treated them. Don't forget to clean the make up after you come home and and make sure you cleanse your face properly each night.

Do skin toner and moisturizer cure acne?
One thing that you need to know is acne is not caused by dirt, so no amount of cleaning and toning is going to get rid of them. So for treating acne you must consult your doctor and eat lots of healthy food and drink lots of water. That is the natural way to keep you face spot free.

Is it ok to do facial?
It can be a real treat to have the facial done, as they can be very relaxing and make you feel properly pampered. However, you should be aware that they should not be used to help 'treat' spots, as this can be quite dangerous if the beauty therapist is not trained. Sometimes a beauty therapist will also squeeze out any spots and blackheads that if it's not done properly, may cause a bigger problem than before.

What is the best way to cover up spots?
Foundation is okay to use and may give you more confidence if you've got a hot date, but remember to look for oil-free one. Whatever you use to put on your skin, wash your hands or sponge before applying foundation.
